Key information
Jagex has officially unveiled RuneScape 4 at RuneFest 2026, marking the fourth installment in the long-running franchise and the developer's very first MMO built using Unreal Engine.
The upcoming title initially started out as a planned expansion for Dragonwilds. However, the scope of the project grew significantly until the team decided that it deserved to be a standalone MMO. Alongside the announcement, Jagex released a teaser trailer offering early glimpses that highlight dragons as well as large-scale adventure and exploration.
Jesse America, the executive producer of Dragonwilds, noted during the event that the concept shifted direction following prototype and design reviews. While Jagex characterizes the project as a typical game from the studio, a release date, target platforms, and the specific version of the Unreal Engine have not yet been announced.
The announcement, which was reported on September 29, 2026, also does not detail how RuneScape 4 will coexist alongside Old School RuneScape, the base game, and Dragonwilds. Jagex has not yet confirmed any plans regarding character progression or a potential transition path from RuneScape 3.
