Key information
British developer Jagex has announced the development of a brand-new MMORPG utilizing the Unreal Engine, currently known by the codename RS4. The project is currently at the teaser stage and is reportedly several years away from release.
Addressing community concerns, Jagex has clarified that RS4 will operate as an independent experience and will not replace any existing titles in the franchise, such as Old School RuneScape, RuneScape, or Dragonwilds. The studio stated that all current games will maintain their own dedicated teams, investment, and roadmaps so that RS4 can exist alongside them.
Narratively, RS4 will be set in Ashenfall, a region located in the northeast of Giélinor, taking place years after the events of Dragonwilds and the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra. Specific details regarding target platforms and the economic model remain unannounced.
In addition to RS4, Jagex has scheduled the release of RuneScape Reignited for December 2, 2026, which will feature a redesigned economy to serve as a new entry point. The franchise is also expanding into animation through a collaboration with Lyrical Animation.
