Key information
Rob Nelson, development director for Grand Theft Auto VI, recently detailed a new gameplay mechanic involving hollow white stars. This system introduces increased difficulty when stealing vehicles, as some cars are equipped with advanced trackers that alert police to the player's location.
When a player steals a vehicle with an active tracker, indicated by a flashing red light, the police can track the car's position. If the player fails to drive quickly enough to escape the area, they risk detection. The hollow white stars signify that while police are aware of the vehicle's location, they do not yet know the player's identity or appearance.
This mechanic encourages players to be more selective and cautious when choosing which vehicles to steal, as high-end or luxury cars are more likely to feature these tracking devices. Players may need to abandon a tracked vehicle to avoid being caught by law enforcement.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game features an open-world setting in Vice City, focusing on a pair of criminals.
