Key information

Grand Theft Auto VI will introduce varying security levels for vehicles, making the theft of high-end luxury models significantly more challenging than older or standard vehicles. While classic or common cars can still be stolen using simple tools like a lockpick, expensive modern sports cars will feature electronic locks, geolocation trackers, and other protective systems that require specialized tools such as the WAiNK application to bypass.

According to Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson, the traditional method of instantly hot-wiring any vehicle by pressing a single button wasted potential gameplay regarding player progression and decision-making. The new mechanics will prevent players from stealing the most expensive vehicles right from the start, requiring story progression and specific contacts to overcome vehicle defenses.

Developed and published by Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. An official PC version has not been announced by Rockstar at this time. The publication date of this report is October 6, 2026.
