Key information

Producer Masachika Kawata recently disclosed that Resident Evil Requiem was initially conceived as an online-focused title. This revelation appeared in the Biohazard 30th Special Mook, a comprehensive fan book detailing the series' history and developer insights.

Director Koshi Nakanishi began development with an online structure in mind. However, research conducted during the process yielded unfavorable results, prompting the team to abandon the online direction and refocus on the series' core horror elements.

The team also reconsidered the protagonist, initially selecting Leon. They determined that Leon's combat proficiency would make the game feel too action-oriented, undermining the intended horror experience. Consequently, they introduced a new character named Grace to better balance the tone.

Capcom intentionally withheld details regarding Leon's involvement to maintain player interest by obscuring the game's balance between horror and action. This shift away from online multiplayer mirrors previous development challenges, such as those faced during the creation of Resident Evil 7.
