Key information
Producer Masachika Kawata recently disclosed that Resident Evil Requiem was initially conceived as an online-focused project. This revelation appeared in the Biohazard 30th Special Mook, which features historical insights and developer interviews regarding the long-running franchise.
Game director Koshi Nakanishi began development with an online structure in mind. However, internal research conducted during the production phase yielded unfavorable results, prompting the team to abandon the online direction to prioritize the series' core horror elements.
The team also reconsidered the protagonist selection. While Leon was the first character chosen, developers feared his combat proficiency would shift the game too far toward action, undermining the intended horror atmosphere. Consequently, they introduced a new character named Grace to balance the experience.
This shift away from multiplayer mirrors previous development challenges at Capcom, where management previously pushed for online features and microtransactions in earlier titles. By focusing on a single-player horror experience, the developers aimed to maintain player interest until the game's final release.
