Key information
Developer Lukas Büffel and publisher Panic have officially released the reaction-based action RPG Gloom Gate. The title is now available as a featured component of the newly launched Playdate Season Three.
Gloom Gate blends traditional dungeon crawling with soulslike mechanics. Players control a knight venturing into a dark castle to locate a mystical gate and lift a curse that has plagued the world.
Lukas Büffel noted that the project began as a technical experiment to create a pseudo-3D over-the-shoulder perspective on the handheld. The developer utilized 3D character models exported for the device's 1-bit display, while ensuring all animations maintained a 50 fps frame rate despite memory constraints.
Season Three is currently available for $39 via the Playdate Catalog. Owners can purchase the collection through October 29 to receive games in a weekly rollout, or opt for a full bundle after that date.
