Key information
Developer Jagex has officially announced a fourth massively multiplayer online game set within the long-running RuneScape franchise, alongside a new animated adaptation project. The reveal took place during RuneFest in Birmingham, England, where the studio showcased an early preview of the upcoming MMO tailored for a new generation of players.
The project is currently in early development with no official title yet, though Jagex is using "RS4" as a provisional working title. The game will bring the world of Gielinor to life using the Unreal Engine, blending the franchise's traditional depth, freedom, and community-driven spirit with modern design and technology. A release is not expected for a few years.
Jagex clarified that RS4 will not replace existing titles such as RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, or RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Each game will maintain a dedicated team and continued investment, with RS4 designed to coexist and offer another way to experience Gielinor. Set during the Sixth Era, the new MMO will begin in Ashenfall years after the events of Dragonwilds and the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra.
Alongside the new game, Jagex announced the development of an animated RuneScape adaptation created in partnership with YouTuber Charlie White, also known as MoistCr1TiKaL, and the Los Angeles-based production company Lyrical Media.
