Key information
Panic has issued a formal advisory to Playdate console owners, urging them to verify their current operating system version. The company warns that secure certificates for older firmware are scheduled to expire on October 15, 2026. While consoles will remain functional after this deadline, the expiration will significantly complicate future server connections and the standard update process.
To maintain full functionality, users must update their devices to at least OS version 3.0.5. The update process is initiated through the Settings menu under the System tab. Depending on the current firmware state, users may be upgraded to version 3.1.2. Panic currently outlines the update procedure specifically for WiFi connections.
Panic clarified that while updating will become more difficult after the October 15, 2026, cutoff, recovery remains possible. Users who miss the deadline may need to utilize the Playdate SDK for Windows or Linux PCs to restore connectivity and apply necessary patches to their handheld hardware.
This maintenance push coincides with the launch of the Season 3 game pass. The first two titles for the new season are scheduled to arrive on October 8, 2026, with subsequent content releases occurring on a weekly basis for subscribers.
