Key information
Recent speculation surrounding Sony's future PlayStation 6 console has circulated online following a publication by GameGPU, which suggested the hardware could reach a theoretical computing power of 80 TFLOPS. This figure sparked widespread discussion because it exceeds the 56,3 TFLOPS announced for NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 5080.
However, analysis from sources like TweakTown indicates that the 80 TFLOPS figure is a result of a technical double-counting error stemming from the Dual Issue architecture. A more rigorous calculation for an AMD RDNA 5 GPU with 54 compute units places the actual raw power closer to 40 TFLOPS. This mirrors a similar misunderstanding during the launch of the PS5 Pro, where community estimates reached over 33 TFLOPS instead of the actual 16,7 TFLOPS standard calculation.
Aside from confirming that the graphical processing unit will be designed by AMD, the remaining hardware details are currently unconfirmed speculations and hypotheses that have not been officially validated by Sony. Furthermore, industry observers suggest that future hardware might prioritize artificial intelligence upscaling technologies over pure brute force to help manage rising development costs.
