Former PlayStation chief Shawn Layden stated in an interview on The Expansion Pass podcast that a potential US$ 1,000 price for the PS6 could become a major hurdle if generational improvements remain merely incremental.
Layden explained that consumers might resist paying near US$ 1,000 for a new console if the evolution is limited to technical advancements like ray tracing and teraflops that lack noticeable everyday impact.
Industry analysts are already considering that the PS6 and Xbox Project Helix might reach that price tier, while the Embracer group indicated Sony could launch the PS6 around 2028 or 2029.
Layden also argued that day-one subscription service releases make it difficult for studios to recover development investments.
