Key information

Sony has quietly introduced a hardware revision for the PlayStation 5, identified as the EDM-051 motherboard. Discovered by technician @Modyfikator89 during the teardown of a Marvel's Wolverine collector pack, this update aims to streamline production, reduce assembly costs, and improve overall repairability.

The console features a redesigned thermal protection barrier surrounding the liquid metal used between the AMD APU and the heatsink. This new frame is designed to better confine the conductive material, reducing the risk of leakage to neighboring components. Despite these changes, independent testing has not confirmed any improvements in operating temperatures or noise levels.

Further cost-optimization measures include the replacement of the HDMI retimer chip with a more economical model. While this component manages high-speed signal stability, the change does not affect the final display output for users. Additionally, the CMOS battery has been relocated to a more accessible position, mirroring design choices seen in the PS5 Pro and allowing for easier replacement without a full console disassembly.

It remains uncertain whether the EDM-051 motherboard will become the standard for all future PS5 production lines or if it will be limited to specific console series.
