Key information

Sony has announced the arrival of AI image upscaling for the standard PlayStation 5, with the new technology already available in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. Named Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), Sony positions the feature on the PlayStation blog as a lesser version compared to the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution found on the PS5 Pro.

According to developers, QSSR improves pixel-level clarity, stability, and environmental detail. Insomniac head of tech Mike Fitzgerald noted that it brings a taste of the PS5 Pro experience to standard console players, while Sucker Punch lead rendering engineer Jasmin Parry stated that QSSR resolves fine details with unprecedented temporal stability on the base hardware.

Digital Foundry tested QSSR and reported exceptional quality boosts, noting substantially improved temporal stability and reduced artifacts, though Ghost of Yotei saw less dramatic improvements. Despite achieving this without the PS5 Pro's dedicated AI technology, Digital Foundry observed a remaining divide between standard PS5 games using QSSR and Pro versions using PSSR.

Sony stated in its blog post that QSSR will now be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers following its initial application in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. Separately, a new PS5 firmware update has rolled out to make security fixes and improve system software performance and stability, though its connection to the QSSR update remains unclear.
