Key information

Questions regarding the future of PlayStation VR2 have emerged following reports that Sony has transferred 43 virtual reality patents to Meta. This move is part of a broader agreement, initiated in December 2025, involving the transfer of 419 patents globally, including 180 in the United States and 239 across Japan, China, Korea, and Europe.

The transferred intellectual property covers technologies developed by Sony between 2010 and 2022, specifically focusing on virtual reality headsets, display systems, and augmented reality glasses. While this transaction does not confirm an official exit from the VR market, it has fueled speculation about the company's long-term commitment to future hardware development.

PlayStation VR2 has faced significant commercial hurdles since its February 2023 launch, including a high price point and a lack of backward compatibility with original PlayStation VR titles. Sony's internal support has been limited, with only two original games produced by the company, forcing the platform to rely heavily on external studios for its library.

Despite these challenges, Sony has not officially abandoned the platform. In October 2024, Eric Lempel of Sony Interactive Entertainment stated that virtual reality remains an important area for the company, even as it continues to navigate a market that has yet to reach its full potential.
