Key information
Reports indicate that a revival of the classic franchise Ape Escape is in development for Sony Interactive Entertainment. According to VGC and journalist Jeff Gerstmann, the project is being handled by the external studio Evening Star, which was founded by Sonic Mania lead designer Christian Whitehead.
Gerstmann noted on his podcast that the title is not near release. Clarifying misconceptions, he stated that Team Asobi is not the developer, directing attention instead toward the creators behind Penny’s Big Breakaway.
Sony reportedly plans to revive dormant IPs by licensing them to external developers following the dismantling of internal studios. VGC sources confirmed this strategy, pointing to partnerships like the upcoming Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots with Bandai Namco, while Killzone is also rumored for revival.
The franchise originally debuted in 1999, utilizing the original PlayStation controller's dual analog sticks. Gameplay involves capturing runaway primates using specialized gadgets such as the Time Net and Stun Club, though no mainline entry has released in over 20 years.
