Key information
Ken Kutaragi, known as the father of PlayStation, recently discussed the future of entertainment at the University of Electro-Communications. During the opening ceremony of the Entertainment Creation Research and Education Center on September 29, 2026, Kutaragi emphasized that the rapid evolution of AI will transform entertainment, allowing human "delusions" or imagination to become actual content.
Kutaragi argues that the current game industry is at a turning point. While early PlayStation development focused on technological innovation, he believes the industry has stagnated by prioritizing massive development resources over true evolution. He predicts that by 2028 or 2029, AI will enable the real-time generation of video and music, fundamentally changing how content is created and experienced.
The transition toward AI-centric design will shift the industry from traditional gaming to a broader form of entertainment. Kutaragi suggests that this shift will move beyond current human-centered design, which he considers outdated. Instead, users will engage in complex, life-like communication with AI, treating these systems more like living entities than mere software tools.
Looking ahead, Kutaragi envisions the new research center as a highly international environment. He emphasizes the importance of assembling elite, individual talent to realize creative visions, rather than relying on traditional corporate structures. By fostering global collaboration, he hopes to create a space where imagination can be realized through advanced technology.
