Key information
Following six hours of hands-on experience, the upcoming title Phantom Blade 0 from developer S-Game has garnered praise for its boss design, soundtrack, and wide linear environments. The game's primary focus is its motion-captured martial arts combat, which aims to capture the essence of Wuxia, a genre characterized by Chinese martial arts and fantastical elements.
The combat system distinguishes itself by moving away from traditional call-and-response mechanics. While many modern games rely on a cycle of dodging or parrying followed by counterattacking, Phantom Blade 0 allows players to attack and defend simultaneously. This approach seeks to replicate the rapid, frenetic clashing of steel found in choreographed martial arts films.
Director and CEO Soulframe Liang confirmed that this design choice is intentional. The developer aims to translate the chaotic, high-speed nature of Wuxia into an interactive medium without resorting to generic quick-time events. This system avoids the turn-based decision-making often hidden within faster-paced action games like Ninja Gaiden.
