Key information
Ken Kutaragi, known as the creator of Sony's first PlayStation console originally released in 1994, recently shared his perspective on the current state of video games.
During an appearance at an event hosted by the Center for Entertainment Research and Education (CEREC) at the University of Electro-Communications (UEC) in Chofu, Tokyo on September 29, 2026, Kutaragi spoke as a special guest.
While noting that the global software game industry has grown tremendously to reach around ¥30 Trillion and represents one of the largest content sectors, Kutaragi argued that modern games are currently in a stagnant state regarding content creation.
He pointed out that although games have advanced significantly in scale and visuals, the fundamental method of making content has not changed much since the PlayStation 1 era when he served as CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.
Comparing the current era to the past, Kutaragi urged new generations of developers to adopt a mindset focused on creating leading-edge technology rather than merely following existing trends, while emphasizing the importance of curiosity.
Despite viewing modern content creation as stagnant, Kutaragi does not believe the industry is dying; instead, he sees it positioned for major changes and potential entry into its next stage, mentioning artificial intelligence as a technology that could redefine platforms and entertainment in the coming years.
