Key information
Unity has introduced a new artificial intelligence tool called Unity Spark, designed to assist users in creating playable game prototypes through written prompts. This launch follows a period of reputational challenges for the company, stemming from a controversial pricing policy change implemented two years ago.
The tool functions by utilizing Unity's asset store, allowing the system to build prototypes from pre-designed elements based on user descriptions. The company promotes the workflow with the slogan, "Give it instructions. Refine it. Publish it," aiming to accelerate the initial development phase.
CEO Matt Bromberg emphasized that Spark is intended to support developers rather than replace creative labor. He cautioned that using AI to generate content or replicate existing games does not equate to professional game design, stating that asking an AI to copy a title does not make one a creator like Hideo Kojima.
Despite the goal of streamlining prototyping, the reliance on pre-existing assets raises questions regarding the visual originality of projects created through the system. Bromberg maintains that the company has no interest in enabling the generation of complete games without significant human effort.
