Key information
Crimson Desert has achieved six million copies sold, yet the title holds a 77 score on Metacritic. Lybee Park, CEO of Pearl Abyss Europe, suggests that the conditions under which critics evaluated the game contributed to this disparity between commercial success and critical reception.
Park notes that reviewers accessed a different version than the one released and faced time constraints. She argues that critics likely focused on the main story, missing the game's core appeal, which is spread across its open world, including hidden details and unexpected situations.
Vandal's own progress review highlighted the impressive technical presentation and world-building of Pywel. However, the publication also identified specific shortcomings, noting issues with controls, narrative pacing, and the integration of various gameplay mechanics.
Since launch, Pearl Abyss has implemented updates to improve inventory management, storage, and fast travel, alongside puzzle adjustments. Currently available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series, the game is also slated for a Nintendo Switch 2 release in the first half of 2027.
