Key information
The US Department of Justice has charged an OpenAI engineer, Abdulrahman Alfozan, with attempting to spy on confidential company communications. Alfozan, a Saudi Arabian national employed by the firm since July 2025, allegedly placed a covert USB audio recording device inside an executive conference room to capture sensitive discussions regarding the company's superintelligence technology.
According to the complaint, the recording device was discovered at the end of last month plugged into a television and concealed within toilet paper. Investigators allege that the device remained in the room for several days, capturing meetings that involved proprietary research, strategic business decisions, and nonpublic information regarding OpenAI's technical progress.
The investigation suggests the use of AI tools in the alleged scheme. Prosecutors claim that a chatbot account linked to Alfozan's spouse submitted prompts requesting instructions on building a continuous audio recorder, improving live listening capabilities, and encrypting an SD card, with some prompts specifically referencing the recording hardware found by the company.
Federal officials have framed the incident as a significant national security matter. FBI Director Kash Patel and Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton emphasized that protecting superintelligence innovation is a top counterintelligence priority, citing the necessity of safeguarding American intellectual property from foreign threats during the global race for technological dominance.
