Key information
Epic Games recently collaborated with the FBI, leading to the arrest of a 29-year-old Alabama player known as WagesOfNinja. The individual was taken into custody on September 23 after allegedly making explicit death threats and threatening law enforcement officers during voice chat sessions in Fortnite.
The developer utilizes a voice reporting system introduced in November 2023 that records audio in five-minute rolling windows. These recordings are stored locally on the user's device and are only transmitted to Epic Games if a player submits a manual report. If no report is filed, the data is automatically overwritten.
While standard trash talk typically results in account bans, Epic Games escalates cases involving physical threats to government agencies. The company provided the FBI with both the audio recording and a transcript of the player's comments, which included claims of wanting to kill others and threats against police.
This incident highlights the legal boundaries of online behavior, where threats of violence or harm to others move beyond platform-specific penalties into criminal territory. Other major publishers, including Microsoft, Sony, and Riot Games, are also increasingly employing moderation technologies to address severe toxicity and potential real-world safety risks.
