Key information
Developed by the Australian studio Beethoven & Dinosaur and published by Annapurna Interactive, the independent game Mixtape has launched on Nintendo's new hybrid console. Initially announced in June 2024 and later delayed to refine its formula, the title secured a historical 19/20 rating from the editorial staff.
Set in 1995, Mixtape follows the final night together of three 17-year-old adolescents named Stacy Rockford, Milly/Slater, and Jasper/Cassandra before high school ends. The narrative utilizes a diégétique musical soundtrack where each song triggers a distinct dreamlike memory, driving the interactivity of segments ranging from skateboarding to a first awkward kiss. If a player makes a mistake, the soundtrack glitches and rewinds instantly.
While the publication praised the stop-motion artistic direction and emotional density of the roughly three-hour coming-of-age experience, the title has sparked debate among players regarding its short interactive film format and game length compared to traditional open-world titles.
Commercially, the game has disrupted standard pricing with an aggressive rate of 15,19 € on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop, while its base price hovers around 20 €. Weighing approximately 10,3 GB with full French translation, the release highlights Annapurna Interactive's role in supporting independent creators on Nintendo's platform.
