Key information
Nintendo has officially stated that it has no plans to abandon physical media for the Switch 2. Bill van Zyll, the company's vice president and general manager for Latin America, confirmed in an interview that Nintendo intends to maintain cartridge support alongside digital versions as long as consumer interest persists.
The company's strategy involves monitoring consumer preferences rather than prioritizing one format exclusively. This approach contrasts with Sony, which has announced plans to cease producing physical versions of new PlayStation games starting in January 2028.
The Switch 2 utilizes both traditional cartridges and Game-Key Cards. The latter acts as a digital download key that requires the card to remain inserted in the console to play. This format has faced criticism from players concerned about long-term game preservation and future access to content.
Despite these concerns, Nintendo continues to provide a mix of traditional cartridges, Game-Key Cards, and digital eShop releases. The company maintains that it will continue to offer these options based on ongoing market demand.
