Nintendo has officially confirmed it currently holds no intentions to abandon physical game releases. Bill van Zyll, the vice president and general manager for Nintendo Latin America, stated that the company remains consumer-focused and continues to value the strong interest fans demonstrate toward physical media.
The company describes its strategy as agnostic, prioritizing consumer preferences when determining distribution methods. This approach ensures that the Nintendo Switch 2, which launched in June 2025, continues to support both digital and physical formats as it progresses through its lifecycle.
While physical options exist, the platform utilizes two distinct formats. Games are available via the Nintendo eShop or on cartridges. However, some releases utilize Game-Key Cards, which function solely as digital licenses rather than containing the full game data. This specific format has previously triggered negative feedback from consumers who expected complete physical software.
This stance contrasts with recent industry shifts, specifically Sony's July announcement regarding the discontinuation of physical discs for new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028. Sony attributed its decision to evolving customer behavior favoring digital storefronts, whereas Nintendo continues to emphasize its flexible, consumer-led approach.
