Key information

Nintendo has officially stated that it intends to maintain support for physical media for the foreseeable future. Bill van Zyll, the company's VP and general manager for Latin America, confirmed this stance in an interview, noting that the organization prioritizes consumer preferences regarding game formats.

The Nintendo Switch 2 platform remains agnostic, offering both digital eShop purchases and physical cartridges. Van Zyll emphasized that there are currently no plans to abandon physical media, acknowledging the strong preference fans have for these tangible products.

Despite this commitment, most Switch 2 cartridges function as authentication keys rather than storage media. Users must download the actual game data from Nintendo's servers, which creates concerns regarding long-term accessibility. Critics argue that if the company eventually shuts down its servers, these cartridges could become non-functional, mirroring the limitations of purely digital ownership.

While developers like Naoki Hamaguchi appreciate the key card system for bypassing storage constraints on physical cartridges, the model faces backlash from players. The reliance on server availability means that, unlike traditional physical media, these cartridges may eventually lose their utility, leaving players without the ability to access their purchased content.
