Key information

NieR franchise creator Yoko Taro recently revealed that he has no current plans for new games, stating he is effectively done with working. During a talk session at The Tenth Mosaic festival, Taro explained that he achieved his primary career goal with his 2003 directorial debut, Drakengard. He views his subsequent work as the remainder of his life, noting he only continues to work to maintain an income.

Despite having enough savings to retire, Taro remains active due to a fear of developing dementia. He noted that he has heard of individuals being diagnosed with the disorder after retiring, so he uses work challenges as a mental exercise to prevent it. He also acknowledged that his eccentric public persona means these statements should be taken with a grain of salt.

Regarding the broader industry, Taro observed that modern technology allows younger creators to develop games more freely, though this has increased competition. He expressed trepidation that this competitive pressure will eventually reach older developers like himself. Furthermore, he clarified that while fans often ask why he is not producing a new NieR sequel, many of his recent projects have been discontinued during development.
