Key information
Reddit user fantasticauthor2736 has developed a mod that converts Diablo 2 Resurrected into a first-person virtual reality game. The project utilizes an existing 3D conversion mod called D2R-3D, alongside FlatVR and BodyWalk to enable motion controller actions and body movement controls.
The modification alters the user interface by moving the inventory to the belt, placing health, mana, and the toolbar on the left wrist, and turning the map into a handheld orb. Gameplay footage demonstrates aiming with motion controllers to shoot fireballs at enemies, though demonstrations have thus far been limited to the first couple zones without intense combat.
The foundational D2R-3D mod, created by emmericp, takes advantage of the game's underlying 3D assets to provide robust camera controls by rendering the title from a different perspective. However, making this work requires adjustments to projectile calculations, lighting, and shadow effects, and currently results in bugs such as floating item names and broken mouse and keyboard targeting.
Players attempting to use the modifications face significant obstacles due to Blizzard's file integrity checker, which causes the online-required game to crash after about a minute of playing. While the creator of D2R-3D noted a workaround exists, it requires programs that could theoretically allow cheating, meaning fantasticauthor2736's upcoming VR mod will likely face the same restriction.
