Key information
Reddit user u/DallasGrave shared a custom solution for an overheating 12VHPWR connector on an RTX 5090 graphics card. The modder, associated with GRAVEPC.com, mounted a custom power distributor module onto the back of the GPU to split the current load across more wires and reduce connector temperatures.
The modification involves soldering additional connections directly to the RTX 5090's PCB power rails and routing them to a resin-printed power distributor housing two female 8-pin connectors. During a 48-hour stress test drawing 550W at full load, the modder reported that the joint temperature never crossed 40C.
Regarding warranty coverage, u/DallasGrave claimed they are a PNY partner and that a PNY-specific card with a similar modification would be available directly from them with a full warranty. However, the mod is not currently listed on the website, and the claim should be viewed with caution given PNY's reported history with third-party cable warranty issues.
The underlying 16-pin connector issue stems from high current running through six +12V connections, which can lead to high resistance, heat buildup, and uneven current distribution if pins make poor contact. While older multi-8-pin setups offered higher safety margins, modern graphics cards draw significantly more power through fewer wires.
