Key information

Danish music producer Frederik Wessberg, known online as Wessberg Is A Nerd, has developed a mod for Bethesda's 2023 title Starfield that enables seamless planetary landings. Unlike the base game, which relies on animations to transition between space and surface, this modification allows players to fly through atmospheres in real-time without loading screens.

The mod functions by modifying the game's 3D rendering pipeline to simultaneously pull atmospheric and surface data. By utilizing the engine's existing, highly detailed planetary information—including orbital parameters and surface maps—the mod generates real-time 3D objects. This approach incorporates volumetric clouds and weather effects like lightning or hail, while avoiding the texture-blending issues and visual glitches seen in previous attempts.

Wessberg noted that the game engine already contains the complex data necessary for such transitions, suggesting the official development team possessed the materials to implement this feature but chose not to. He expressed surprise at the depth of the underlying simulation data, which remains largely underutilized by the developers despite the release of subsequent DLC content.

The mod is currently in an adjustment phase. Once completed, the creator intends to release it for free on Nexus Mods, aiming to provide the seamless exploration experience that players have sought since the game's launch three years ago.
