Key information

Accessory maker Mechanism has launched the $49 Basecase for the Switch 2, a snap-on protective shell that integrates with the company’s existing modular mount ecosystem. The product aims to improve console ergonomics while offering customization through swappable rear plates and Joy-Con grips.

The case features a snug fit that clamps near the USB-C port, maintaining full access to buttons, vents, and the kickstand. Users can replace the rear plate with custom 3D-printed designs, such as versions featuring Lego pegs or cartridge storage. The modular Joy-Con grips come in two sizes to enhance comfort and include slots for physical game cartridges.

Reviewer Cameron Faulkner notes the Basecase feels more robust than competing thin plastic shells. He highlights that the Joy-Con grips include a rubber lip to prevent accidental drops, a design improvement over earlier products from other manufacturers. However, the case is incompatible with the official dock, requiring a provided female-to-male USB-C cable adapter for video output.

While the dock adapter installation is described as somewhat difficult, the case is recommended for those already invested in Mechanism’s mounting system. Users can access 3D printer files for additional components via Makerworld or Printables.
