Key information
Ubisoft Montreal Creative Director Xavier Marquis is advancing the development of March of Giants, a 4v4 real-time strategy-infused MOBA hybrid, despite acknowledging the current market conditions for new MOBA titles are less than favorable.
Marquis explains that the project was not driven by business decisions or blindness to past failures in the MOBA and battle royale spaces. Instead, the team wanted to offer something distinct, drawing on Marquis's personal history as a MOBA and RTS player, dating back to 1992's Dune, Command and Conquer, and Warcraft 3.
The project attempts to recapture the feeling of mastering an army while maintaining a character-centric MOBA approach. Marquis and the Montreal team face a challenging landscape historically dominated by League of Legends and Dota 2, with past challengers like Infinite Crisis, Paragon, and Heroes of the Storm failing to sustain themselves.
Drawing parallels to Rainbow Six Siege, which launched over a decade ago when many critics claimed the shooter genre was entirely 'done,' Marquis and his team of ex-Siege talent hope to innovate and create a new gameplay loop, driven by a studio-wide passion for crafting something tough and adrenaline-inducing.
