Key information

Garry Newman, creator of the influential Garry's Mod, has released a spiritual successor titled s&box via Facepunch Studios. Launched on Steam on April 28, the project utilizes the Source 2 engine to facilitate user-created content and community experiences.

The game has faced significant challenges, currently holding less than half positive reviews on Steam. Player engagement remains low, with concurrent users failing to exceed 800, a stark contrast to the 37,000 concurrent players reported for Garry's Mod within the same 24-hour window.

Content creator Eridium criticized the title for poor character design, an influx of low-quality AI-generated game modes, and insufficient communication from the developers. Newman acknowledged these failures, describing the launch and the recent free weekend as unsuccessful.

In response, Newman expressed his determination to improve the platform. He plans to restrict AI-generated content in favor of human-made assets over the next month and intends to implement a Workshop system for maps and games to address community concerns.
