Key information

Originally released by Quest on October 6, 1995, for the Super Famicom, Tactics Ogre served as a spiritual successor to Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. Before working on Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Final Fantasy XII, author Yasumi Matsuno established his signature style featuring complex geopolitics and moral dilemmas within a tactical role-playing game.

The narrative steers away from traditional heroic fantasy tropes, discarding the concept of saving the world from an ancient evil in favor of a human struggle for the independence of the fictional archipelago Valeria. The plot involves three ethnicities, a faltering central power, and political manipulations, drawing comparisons to a history manual and reflecting Matsuno's inspirations, including Akira Kurosawa.

Players face major, irreversible choices that carry significant consequences for the narrative and lead to different endings, avoiding simple good or evil binaries. Gameplay utilizes an isometric grid, turn-based progression, specialized units, and mechanics incorporating terrain heights and line-of-sight, though later versions like the PSP release and Reborn helped simplify the systems.

The title's visual presentation features minimalist sprites and dark environments crafted by art director Akihiko Yoshida, alongside a serious, martial musical score composed by Masaharu Iwata and Hitoshi Sakimoto.
