Key information
Sony has announced plans to cease the production of PlayStation physical discs by 2028, citing consumer preference as a primary driver for this shift. However, recent data from The Game Business and Ampere suggests that the transition away from physical media may not be as naturally driven by consumer demand as the company claims.
Market figures reveal significant interest in physical copies for specific titles. For instance, 35% of global sales for Marvel's Wolverine were physical, with European sales for the same title reaching 51%. Other games like Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Blood of Dawnwalker, and Silent Hill: Townfall also maintained physical sales shares between 30% and 45.4%.
Analyst Joost van Dreunen notes that the physical format remains relevant due to a persistent consumer desire to collect games. While some major titles like EA Sports FC 27 and Minecraft show low physical adoption, the continued demand for narrative-driven, single-player experiences highlights a discrepancy in Sony's narrative regarding market evolution.
Critics suggest Sony's decision is likely motivated by cost-cutting, the elimination of second-hand markets, and the centralization of sales through the PS Store. Furthermore, the expiration of various Blu-ray related patents between 2026 and 2031 may limit the company's ability to profit from physical media, potentially influencing their strategic pivot.
