Key information

The original Tomb Raider title challenged players with complex environments and exploration, a design philosophy that Crystal Dynamics intends to maintain for the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. The developers aim to avoid modern hand-holding mechanics, encouraging players to venture out, investigate, and navigate the world independently.

Jeff Adams, experience director at Crystal Dynamics, emphasized that the goal is to foster a sense of adventure where players can get lost and find their own way back. This approach is intended to make the act of traversing the game world feel rewarding.

Despite the focus on tradition, the developers have introduced a crafting system to address realism concerns. Adams noted that justifying the presence of a medkit in a tomb sealed for 10,000 years is difficult as the game's realism increases, necessitating the inclusion of resource gathering.

The effectiveness of this new crafting mechanic within the traditional formula remains to be seen. Players can expect to experience these changes when the game launches on February 12, 2027.
