Key information
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Warhorse Studios co-founder Martin Klima discussed the inspirations behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance, stating that the project stemmed from a personal fatigue with standard roleplaying games. Klima noted that he grew tired of traditional tropes such as killing a dark lord, romancing companions, and embarking on grand missions to save the universe.
Klima compared standard fantasy roleplaying games to the satirical idler Progress Quest, arguing that many titles remain straightforward power fantasies tailored for teenagers. He suggested that while players aged 16 or 17 enjoy these power fantasies, the gaming audience is much older today, leading him to wonder if players have outgrown the repetitive formula.
Addressing why the 'chosen one' narrative remains prevalent, Klima stated that publishers prefer recycling formulas that have succeeded previously, pointing to publishers like Ubisoft as examples. While praising the high craftsmanship, beautiful animations, models, and polished bug-free experiences of Ubisoft's games, he expressed a desire for such production value to support more innovative concepts, while acknowledging the financial risks involved.
