RuneScape developer Jagex reacted after community members spotted widespread generative artificial intelligence usage in a promotional video for RuneScape 3's Dragon Slayer 2 quest presented at RuneFest. Reddit users pointed out elements such as a six-fingered hand and medieval boots looking like Air Jordans.

The promotional video was created by an outside partner who had specifically promised that generative artificial intelligence would not be utilized. Consequently, the company has taken down the promotional material while reviewing the matter.

Jagex stated that its stance remains that it refuses to utilize generative artificial intelligence for games, artwork, or creative assets, and will not intentionally permit it on its behalf. The developer noted this marks the second consecutive instance where trusted partners raised generative AI concerns, prompting an internal process overhaul and plans to commission community creators.

The previous incident involved a partnership with competitive gaming organization and lifestyle brand 100 Thieves. Jagex stated it rejects artificial intelligence in games, marketing, merchandising, and partnerships, emphasizing human craft and creativity.

Earlier, SVP of product James Dobrowski noted a commitment to barring generative AI from any player-facing assets, while remaining open to efficiency tooling to assist staff.
