Jagex recently removed a promotional trailer for the upcoming RuneScape 3 expansion, Hoard of Dragons, after viewers identified the use of generative AI imagery. The expansion, which includes the Dragon Slayer II quest, is scheduled for release in 2027.
The trailer featured visual anomalies that drew immediate criticism, most notably a knight depicted with six fingers. Additionally, observers noted a medieval warrior appearing to wear modern sneakers, a detail that appeared unintentional rather than a deliberate marketing collaboration.
Jagex social manager Alex Sween addressed the controversy on Reddit, attributing the trailer's production to a trusted external partner who had previously confirmed they would not utilize generative AI. Sween apologized for the oversight while reiterating that Jagex maintains a policy against using such technology for its games or creative assets.
Despite the company's stated stance, the incident has prompted scrutiny regarding Jagex's oversight of commissioned marketing materials. The removal of the video follows public complaints about the quality and authenticity of the assets provided by their external contractor.
