Key information
Wizards of the Coast has announced that its 2027 Universes Beyond set, Darkhold Destiny, will mark a significant shift for the series. Unlike previous crossovers that functioned primarily as showcases for external intellectual properties, this Marvel-themed expansion aims to integrate the complex storytelling and original character design typically reserved for Magic’s core multiverse sets.
The set features an original narrative where supervillains Hela and Dormammu utilize the Darkhold to incite chaos. Heroes such as Thor, Doctor Strange, and Scarlet Witch will lead the opposition. To support this, Marvel will release a tie-in comic. Furthermore, Wizards collaborated with Marvel to introduce an original superhero character, which the publisher hopes will eventually integrate into broader Marvel media.
Mechanically, Darkhold Destiny addresses common criticisms regarding limited set sizes and gameplay depth. Senior vice president Aaron Forsyth describes it as an expert-level set, noting it will feature a diverse array of artifacts, enchantments, and sorceries rather than focusing solely on legendary creatures. Mark Rosewater confirms the set supports all 10 two-color combinations, ensuring robust Limited format play.
While Wizards of the Coast remains cautious about future plans due to long-term partnership cycles, the team expressed interest in pursuing similar narrative-driven crossovers. Rosewater noted that establishing this precedent makes future iterations more likely, provided they secure the right partners.
