Key information
The long-gestating BioShock movie adaptation remains in development, with director Francis Lawrence offering a cautiously optimistic update. Lawrence confirmed to GamesRadar that the creative team is currently refining the script and feels positive about the project's trajectory.
The project has faced significant hurdles over the past decade, including a failed attempt by Gore Verbinski to produce an R-rated theatrical version. After Netflix acquired the rights in 2022, internal leadership changes led to a strategic shift, resulting in plans to scale the production into a more personal film.
Screenwriters Michael Green and Justin Rhodes are currently drafting the screenplay. While producer Roy Lee suggests that Lawrence could potentially begin work on the film in 2027, he noted that Hollywood schedules are subject to change. No casting details have been announced.
Despite the history of development challenges, Lawrence remains eager to helm the adaptation. Furthermore, rights-owner Take-Two is reportedly anxious for the film's release, aiming to align the project with future developments within the franchise.
