Key information
Solo developer Christoper Yabsley is creating Heathen, an upcoming indie dungeon crawler that adapts the loot-focused gameplay of Diablo into a first-person perspective. Set within a subterranean labyrinth beneath the fantasy town of Saltgrave, the game tasks players with confronting an ancient horror.
The title features a new dismemberment system designed to enhance the tactile feel of melee combat. Yabsley notes that removing limbs is essential for defeating complex, many-limbed creatures encountered in the dungeon. Players can even decapitate enemies and kick their heads midair to strike other foes.
PC Gamer contributor expresses enthusiasm for the game's combat, comparing its slick, fast-paced nature to titles like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and Warhammer: Vermintide 2. The reviewer also highlights the game's Diablo-esque elements, such as treasure chest loot drops and town portal mechanics, though they note some UI elements may be placeholders.
Heathen will include online co-op support, drawing inspiration from Yabsley's childhood experiences playing Diablo. While the game is planned for an early access release, there is currently no confirmed launch date.
