Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has publicly questioned Sony's reported decision to phase out PlayStation discs starting in 2028. Speaking in an interview last week on an episode of The Expansion Pass podcast, Layden acknowledged that he was not in the room when the choice was made, noting the convenience of digital downloads.

Despite acknowledging the convenience of digital platforms, Layden argued that eliminating physical discs entirely is a misguided move that alienates a crucial segment of the audience. He highlighted that the remaining twenty percent of players who rely on physical media represent the most faithful consumers, often purchasing multiple copies of games.

Layden raised concerns regarding consumer ownership, emphasizing that digital purchases shift the nature of acquisition from owning a game to merely holding access to a digital asset. He questioned the value proposition of digital-only purchases by stating that if consumers cannot sell an item, they do not truly own it.

Additionally, Layden noted that players naturally anticipate worst-case scenarios, which can negatively impact a brand's reputation. It remains to be seen whether any financial savings from halting disc production will outweigh the associated ill will.
