Key information
Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden recently shared his perspective on Sony's reported plan to end PlayStation discs starting in 2028. Appearing on an episode of The Expansion Pass podcast, Layden discussed the implications of transitioning entirely away from physical media.
While acknowledging that digital downloads offer undeniable convenience, Layden emphasized that eliminating physical discs entirely could alienate a crucial segment of players. He noted that the remaining physical media buyers often represent the most dedicated fans who collect and treasure physical copies.
Layden raised critical questions regarding consumer ownership in a purely digital ecosystem, pointing out that losing the ability to sell a purchased item fundamentally redefines ownership into merely buying temporary access to a digital asset.
Furthermore, Layden warned that these changes invite consumers to imagine worst-case scenarios, potentially damaging the brand's reputation. Sony also pursued other recent initiatives, including patents related to AI patches and an NFC card reader.
