Grand Theft Auto 5 has become a global phenomenon, selling over 230 million copies since its 2013 release. Beyond its status as a top-selling title, the game fostered a massive community, evolving from a crime simulator into a versatile digital space for stunt performers, filmmakers, and social groups.

Mechanically, the game introduced a unique character-switching system that allowed players to control three distinct protagonists. Rockstar also refined the driving physics and expanded the world into the open San Andreas countryside, moving away from the grounded, unforgiving tone of its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 4.

However, the launch of GTA Online was initially troubled. Reviewer Keza MacDonald described it as a "colour sketch" plagued by server crashes and repetitive missions. Former designer Imran Sarwar admitted the mode struggled early on, losing millions of players before Rockstar successfully pivoted to complex, cooperative heists and content updates.

Today, GTA Online functions as a platform for diverse experiences, effectively replacing traditional single-player expansions. While analyst James McWhirter notes this model helps Take-Two bridge the gap between major releases, it also led to the cancellation of planned solo DLC. As the industry looks toward the sequel in November 2026, the challenge remains whether Rockstar can successfully manage two concurrent live services without cannibalizing its established player base.
