Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi explained in a Radio Times interview that he fought for a physical disc release as the video game industry moves toward an all-digital future. Hamaguchi noted that his own fondness for physical editions and collecting signed copies influenced his push to include a disc option for the game.
The game is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. While physical owners on platforms like PS5 and Xbox Series X will receive a disc containing the opening, the full experience will require a hefty additional download.
Addressing fans on social media demanding a full disc version, Hamaguchi clarified that while he advocated for the physical version as much as possible through internal and first-party negotiations, product line-up and SKU decisions ultimately belong to the publishing team. He concluded that he did his best given the circumstances surrounding the tricky subject of physical media.
