Key information
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that he fought for a physical release as the gaming industry transitions toward an increasingly digital future. During an interview, Hamaguchi explained that his personal appreciation for physical editions and signed copies drove him to advocate for a disc option.
Addressing fan requests for a full disc release, Hamaguchi noted that his authority as director is focused on game content, while product line-ups and SKUs fall under the publishing team's responsibility. Nevertheless, he used his position to negotiate internally and with first parties for a one-disc strategy.
The game will include a physical option described as a key disc containing only the opening, and players on platforms like Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will require a hefty additional download. This approach has left some fans split, leading Hamaguchi to state that he did his best.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, across Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Hamaguchi acknowledged that while some fans demand physical copies with the full game, industry shifts suggest that physical media may eventually become disc-less.
