An Unheard Farewell serves as an introductory quest in Valor Mortis, tasking players with assisting the Adjutant Sous-Officier in the Valley of Ashes to locate his missing scouts.
To reach the scouts, players must first progress to the top of the elevator shaft. This involves unlocking the lift by shooting two glowing Nephtogloblin growths and pulling the lever. Once at the top, players should take the elevator down and jump off at a ledge halfway down to find a burnable wall leading to a cave.
Inside the cave, players must defeat a soldier enemy, preferably using fire, to retrieve the scouts' notes. Returning to the Adjutant Sous-Officier allows the player to choose between telling the truth or lying about the scouts' fate.
Regardless of the choice, players receive the Sleight of Hand amber. Telling the truth grants additional catalysts after resting. Alternatively, lying results in finding the Adjutant's corpse in the cave after resting, which provides a Remnant's Return item for reclaiming lost catalysts.
