Key information
Zach Cregger's recent Resident Evil film has achieved significant box office success, though it currently holds the third position among the franchise's highest-grossing entries. The 2016 release, The Final Chapter, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, remains the top-earning film in the series with $312 million in global revenue.
Cregger's project has earned approximately $250 million worldwide. To claim the top spot, the film requires an additional $60 million to surpass The Final Chapter and must also overtake 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife, which accumulated roughly $300 million globally.
While the film trails in global totals, it currently ranks first domestically. It stands as the only live-action entry in the series to perform better domestically than internationally. Performance in China, where the franchise maintains popularity, could potentially push the film to $280 million, marking a career high for Cregger.
Constantin Films, which has held the rights since the '90s, produced these features. The studio previously considered pausing the franchise following the performance of 2021's Welcome to Raccoon City, which is noted as the lowest-performing live-action installment, before Cregger presented his pitch.
