IGN spoke with Rockstar North Head of Development and Co-Studio Head Rob Nelson regarding Grand Theft Auto 6, discussing the 13-year development process behind the immersive open world set in Vice City and Leonida. Nelson highlighted how the current hardware generation allowed developers to utilize console memory to create non-player characters with greater height and body shape variety than previously possible, retargeting animations on the fly.
The game features protagonists Jason and Lucia, whose romantic relationship is entirely optional for players. Safehouses function similarly to camps in Red Dead Redemption 2, allowing players to interact with the space and manage character routines. Players can switch between Jason and Lucia openly during the narrative, utilize cosmetic options at hair salons and clothing shops, and maintain their relationship by exploring and completing activities together in the open world.
Grand Theft Auto 6 expands upon previous police and interaction mechanics. Law enforcement will track a player's heat, outfit, and vehicle. Players can utilize tools such as key cloners or a phone scanner to examine locked vehicles. Additionally, a Criminal Profile tracks the player's actions, while a Focus mode assists in locating points of interest and police officers.
